Team GB Sprint Athlete
Joey started athletics at the age of 10 and enjoyed beating the boys. Despite running in the Milton Schools cross country competitions and doing very well – she craved speed.
Joey ran her first 100m at the age of 11 in a borrowed vest and ran 13.8. At 14 Joey made a big breakthrough running an 11.79 at the South of England Champs, which put her 2nd on the all time U15 age group just behind Katharine Merry. She also qualified for the World Youth Games but was told she was too young to go! That year she ran 24.06 in the 200m to win the English Schools putting her 4th on the U15 all time list.
Joey ran 43 races in that year and was unbeaten in all of them and ranked number 1 in Europe for her age group at the 200m. To finish off 2003 she was shortlisted for the BBC Junior Sports Personality of the Year.
Winning bronze in the 200m and gold in the 4x100m at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Australia and getting a Silver medal in the European U20 4x400m were some fantastic achievements in 2003. Similarly winning gold in the 4x100m at the European U23s in Lithuania last year when the team were predicted to finish 7th or 8th.
