Matt Windle is a boxer and poet. Formally a sprinter, he was the Birmingham and Midlands champion for both the 100m and 2000m. In 2007/08 he was Birmingham’s young poet laureate and is the face of the new Birmingham library. Matt’s ‘day job’ is teaching often disaffected young people in schools around the Midlands.
Matt now fights out of Fighting Fit City Gym in Birmingham and has just signed his first contract as professional boxer after over 60 fights at amateur level.
Talking about this unusual combination of having a boxing poet, Matt comments:
“I like to come forward and work on the inside and I’m very fit, so the four and six-round fights should definitely suit me.”
There’s been no mickey-taking from fellow fighters about Matt’s day job.
“They love it at the boxing gym,” “More people from the boxing world have come to see me read poetry than people from the poetry world see me fight.”
