Amino acids are the building blocks of protein.  There are 21 in total which are named in relation to the body’s ability to produce them and subsequent dependence on intake through diet.

There are 9 Essential amino acids which are ‘essential’ to gain through the diet.  They are;  Histidine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, Tryptophan, Valine and Lysine.

There are 7 Conditionally Non-Essential amino acids which can be synthesized (made) by the body but under certain conditions (abnormal stress or illness), additional amounts maybe needed through nutrition.  They are; Arginine, Asparagine, Glutamine, Glycine, Proline, Serine and Tyrosine.

Finally, there are 4 Non-Essential amino acids which the body can synthesize, so they are not needed to be consumed through the diet.  They are; Alanine, Asparatate, Cysteine and Glutamate.
